Artificial intelligence adoption and workplace training

The new study by Prof. Dr. Samuel Mühlemann, Institute of Human Resource Education & Management, shows that the introduction of AI is not just about automation – companies are also investing in people: more apprenticeships, more training for advanced positions, and no signs of higher layoffs.

AI is changing training: what companies are really doing

How are companies responding to the use of artificial intelligence? Analysis of German company data from 2019–2023 shows that where AI is being introduced on a long-term basis, the number of new training places created in the existing training system is growing by around 14%. Companies are not entering the training market more frequently, but they are expanding their offerings if they already provide training.

At the same time, continuing education resources are shifting: there are slight increases overall, especially for highly qualified employees.

This fits with a dual image of AI:

Automation reduces the need for simple routine tasks.

Augmentation increases the need for advanced skills.

Conclusion: The dual training system is proving to be a key lever for building a future-proof workforce in the age of AI—equally relevant for students and companies alike: Training remains important, but continuing education is gaining in importance.
